‘Learning about caring; caring about learning’

Sycamore – Year 5 / Year 6

Welcome to Sycamore Class!

Croeso Dosbarth Sycamore!

Home Learning (Week Beginning Monday 1st June 2020)

Dear Parents/Guardians and Pupils,

I hope you are all well and have enjoyed your half term with all the nice weather we had. Teachers will be calling parents this week on a no caller id number to catch up and see how you are all doing.

Home learning for his week is listed below. If there are any problems please email me at lewis.watkins@millbrookprimary.co.uk and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Remember, do the work when it best suits you. As the pupils well-being, as well as yours, is more important at this current time. You are all doing an amazing job!

Pupils can keep an eye on Purple Mash and Mathletics as tasks are posted on a regular basis.

I encourage all pupils to keep in contact on Google Classroom as it's great hearing from pupils.

Don't forget to do your PE with Joe Wicks every day at 9 am, on his YouTube channel. This helps with your mental and physical well-being!      https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1

Thank you and keep safe,

Mr Watkins

Home Learning Activities

Task 1: Think about an incident or event since your time in lockdown e.g. a family game night, learning a new skill, creating a meal, camping in the garden. Turn the event into a news report! You could create a newspaper, television report or an interview. Include: Who? What? Where? When? Why? Report in third person – she, he, they. Use past tense – it has already happened. Make sure it is true! If possible, share them with others in your class or school so you can see everyone’s news!

Task 2: Explore the history of media. Can you find out when the television was invented? What was wireless telegraphy? When was the internet invented? How has social media impacted the spread of news?

Task 3: SpaceX launched Nasa astronauts in a historic mission on private spaceship. Can you use your artistic skills to create the scene of the launch?

Task 4: Quite often, the news on the TV or the radio begins and ends with music. Sometimes we call this a jingle. It is usually quite catchy, simple and easily recognised. Listen to the music found at the start of BBC Newsround or the Picture News Virtual Assembly. What do you like/dislike about it? Can you create your own news jingle?

Home Learning Activities

Task 1: Design your dream home! Include its location, what type of home it will be e.g. a tree house, boat, bungalow, caravan, castle and what its exterior and interior will look like. Create your design using labelled diagrams and short descriptions. Challenge – can you create a bird’s eye view drawing (floor plan) of the interior design? Use your mathematical skills and knowledge to create your drawing to scale!

Task 2: Select a period in history e.g. Ancient Egypt, Romans, Vikings, Ancient Greeks, Victorian Britain. Find out how their homes were designed and built. How were they the same/different to homes today?

Task 3: Draw a picture and write a description of your own home. Include what you like/don’t like about it, where it is, what is near it, what it looks like.

Outdoor Learning Day

Outdoor Learning Day is taking place on Thursday 21st May 2020. It is a great opportunity for the children to enjoy learning outside. See the document below for different ideas you may want to try out. Don't forget to share your learning on Google Drive or on the Millbrook Family Room page on Facebook.

If you are unable to access the outdoors then please see some ideas below:

  1. Write about or draw the nature you can see outside your window.
  2. Play a nature-based game of ‘I spy’ out of your window.
  3. Open your window and listen to the sounds of nature.
  4. Spot clouds and keep a journal of all the things you see in them.
  5. Make a nature scrapbook – things you can hear, see, feel.

Home Learning Activities

Task 1: Design and make a toy! Decide what you could make using items you already have at home e.g. a tower set, pencil puppets, a shoebox house, a sock soft toy, a car ramp. Be creative! Once you have decided, plan your design carefully: name of your toy, draw a labelled picture of your design, make a list of resources and equipment you will need, think about how you will make it.

Task 2: Describe your favourite toy. Think about what it looks and feels like, when and where you got it, how it works or how you use it to play and why it is your favourite toy. Make sure you include a picture of it too!

Task 3: Research toys from the past and compare with toys we have now. Discuss differences and similarities. I would suggest comparing Victorians toys with toys that you have now, as we investigated the Victorians last term.

The pupils well-being, as well as yours, is more important. Any work that you do get done is a bonus! We thank parents and guardians for the hard work you are doing with your child. We understand how difficult it can be. The work is uploaded weekly so that there is plenty of activities for pupils to choose from.

I encourage all pupils to keep in contact on Google Classroom as it's great hearing from pupils.

Don't forget to take pictures and share them on google drive or google classroom before you send them.
